In-vitro Fertilisation

Helping Dreams of Parenthood Come True with Compassionate Care

What is IVF?

In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) where eggs are retrieved from a woman's ovaries and fertilised by sperm in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the woman's uterus to achieve pregnancy. IVF is a widely used procedure that helps many couples overcome various fertility challenges.

The IVF Process

IVF process involves several steps:

Oian Stimulation

Fertility drugs are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds ensures optimal egg development.

Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries using a thin needle guided by ultrasound. This procedure is performed under mild sedation or anaesthesia.

Sperm Collection and Fertilisation

A sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a donor. The eggs are then fertilised with the sperm in a laboratory dish. This can be done using conventional fertilisation or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg.

Embryo Culture

The fertilised eggs (embryos) are cultured in the lab for several days, typically 3-5 days, to allow for cell division and development.

Embryo Transfer Process

The best-quality embryos are selected and transferred to the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. The number of embryos transferred depends on various factors, including the woman’s age and embryo quality.

Luteal Phase Support

Hormonal support, usually in the form of progesterone, is provided to help maintain the uterine lining and support early pregnancy.

Pregnancy Test

Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is performed to check for pregnancy.

The Risks of IVF

While IVF is generally safe, there are potential risks, including:

Multiple pregnancies

Multiple pregnancies if multiple embryos are transferred

OHSS

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), caused by excessive response to fertility drugs.

Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside the uterus.

Birth defects

Birth defects, although the risk is similar to natural conception.

Emotional Stress

Emotional stress during IVF treatment can be overwhelming and challenging, affecting individuals on both a physical and emotional level.

Psychological stress

Dealing with psychological stress during IVF treatment can be challenging for many individuals going through the process.
